We had a traditional 4th of July BBQ at Mark and Chris' house and then walked across the street to take in some fireworks. The Carbonale Fire Department put on a great pyrotechnic display!

Picture this…it's a hot day, the sky is vivid blue, Mount Sopris looms in the background, and the river is cool and clear. Can you think of a better way to spend the day than rafting down a snow melt river toward Glenwood Springs? Many thanks to Jim Bob for the use of his raft and his expert rowing.

Our son can be described as an ardent fisherman. He'll fish anytime, anywhere and for just about anything. Many times, he's fishing - NOT catching, so, the stocked pond at Spruce Lake Campground was a lot of fun. He caught so many fish that we experimented with different recipes. So far, trout dotted with butter, sprinkled with salt & pepper, sealed in foil and grilled is our favorite. Thanks to Bob, who we met in Ft. Collins for the aforementioned recipe.
Here fishy, fishy, fishy…..

While at the local Safeway in Estes Park, Co replenishing our milk supply, who do I run into? Our pastor from Austin, TX, Will Davis, Jr. and his wife Susie! We got together for a relaxed dinner and lots of laughs. It was great to spend time with some dearly missed friends.

The beautiful snow capped mountains, the herds of massive elk, the diversity of the terrain - are, in a word, breathtaking. Rocky Mountain National Park also offers a look back in time at the Holzwarth Historic Site - an early 20th century working farm and dude ranch. All of the buildings and furnishings were donated by the Holzwarth family, so, everything was authentic to the site - the Prohibition Era still for making "medicinal" whiskey, the expert taxidermy work, the washing machine and the genuine buffalo coat. The kids learned a lot about the different ecosystems contained in Rocky Mountain NP and the history of the area as evidenced by another Jr. Ranger badge.

There's no better way to experience the Rockies than to take a hike! We packed a picnic, our son brought his fly-fishing rod and we hit the trail to Dream Lake, a beautiful nook in the grand crevices of the Rocky Mountains.

Guernsey, WY is a very cool place to bring a study of the Westward Expansion to life. We explored Register Cliffs where pioneers carved their names in the sandstone near their camp on the North Platte river and we walked in the Trail Ruts made in the soft stone by those traveling on the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails. All of the emigrants funneled through Fort Laramie to re-stock, re-provision and rest up before their trek over the mountains, so, we stopped there and the kids earned yet another Jr. Ranger badge. What an amazing way to study our nation's history!

Is there a better way to celebrate Dad's Day than with 9 holes of golf at the Trail Ruts Golf Course in Guernsey, WY? It only took us 5 hours! We all improved by the last hole, though.

Thrills, spills, rodeo clowns and queens - we got to experience it all, up close, at the Great Plains Indian Rodeo adjacent to the Crazy Horse Memorial. Judy and Jerry Wayne Olson brought their beautiful Palamino, Justin Boots (JB for short), who performed during the rodeo. Have you ever seen a horse take a bow?
